1.618 The Golden Ratio

The cycles of birth and death, summer and winter, day and night, in-breath and out-breath, all collectively weave our contrasting perceptions of life. In a new series of paintings, Ralph “rEN” Dillard unpacks the subtle connections between these seemingly different conditions. 1.618 is a departure from rEN’s more illustrative offerings. This new series fits neatly into a conceptualized package of fifteen abstract oil paintings all centered around the proportion of the Greek alphabet Phi . The Golden Ratio, or Phi, found throughout nature, also applies in understanding the relationship of God to Creation.  1.618 demonstrates that there is only one way to divide a line so that its parts are in proportion to, or in the image of the whole.

“Each painting is an attempt to produce order out of chaos. I chose to work on compressed, pressure treated particle board because of the random textures on the wood’s surface. The unpredictable patterns in the backdrop support the orderly geometric art on the surface” rEN.

The 15 paintings are segmented into five groupings of three. Each of the five arrangements represent space, spring, summer, fall, winter. The paintings also incorporate the five elements: Earth, water, fire, air, aether. The elements are the vibratory archetypes of Cosmic Intelligence that underlie creation and the series.
